Like any other business, nursing homes are a profit driven enterprise. While
most nursing homes provide good care, sometimes the motivation to increase
revenue, at the expense of providing care, will drive the home to cut back
services and subject their patients to neglect and abuse. Further, sometimes

TYPES OF ELDER ABUSE
Neglect: Negligent abuse has occurred when someone has acted in "conscious
disregard of the rights of others." Here the act needs to be reckless. These acts
include, failing to provide medical attention causing conditions to worsen and

Physical Abuse: This is the worst type of elder abuse. Here you should look out
for the less obvious indicators such as burns caused by ropes and other
restraining tools, bruises in hidden areas of the body, a detached retina, etc.
Emotional Abuse: While this is more difficult to prove and detect, it can be just as
damaging as physical abuse. You should look out for signs of depression and
fear.
Financial Abuse: Because many seniors have accumulated assets they are a
target for financial abuse and scams. This usually occurs when care givers,
heirs, and professionals who owe a duty to the senior, get greedy and have the
seniors make financial transfers of money and assets. It also occurs when
con-artists target seniors with scams.
ELDER ABUSE IS BECOMING A MAJOR PROBLEM
According to studies contracted by the U.S. Department of Health and Human
Services approximately 10% of the nursing homes in the United States have
been cited for nursing home abuse violations that have resulted in actual harm
to its residents. That is an alarmingly high figure.
To combat this, Congress passed laws which require nursing homes to provide
its residents with basic standards of care. These include preventing bed sores,
providing routine bathing, giving appropriate medical care, supervising the
seniors so they don't injure themselves, and not using cruel physical and
chemical restraints.
Despite these efforts congress cannot adequately police the nursing homes and
severe violations continue to occur. As a result it is up to the friends and family
to bring elder abuse matters to the forefront by punishing the violators and
